Front Yard of 44 Blueberry Hill, Wednesday Afternoon

It was a nice day and Phoebe had climbed the large tree in the front yard. She was about halfway up the tree, reclining with her back against the tree trunk. She was stretched out along the limb and looked both comfortable and precarious.

Why had she climbed the tree?

Because she was struck with the sudden urge to do so.

Sam was upstairs, working on the window seat in the soon-to-be nursery, when he caught sight of something in the tree.

And promptly stuck his head out the window.

"What are you doing?!?"

Phoebe tried to look innocent as she looked down at him.

"Getting fresh air?"

Sam leaned forward, out of the open window, incredulous and maybe just a tiny bit frantic. "You could fall!"

He had not just wobbled a little bit, really.

"Uh huh..."

Because yes, she had thought of that which is why her back was pressed hard enough against the tree to cause bruising later.

And she'd get a boyfriend fretting over that later, too.

Sam -- who just happened to be working shirtless -- sighed and leaned his head against the windowframe. "Please don't fall?"

"Not planning on it.." She said with a forced smile.

"Baby," Sam said patiently, "why are you up in a tree?"

"Because I climbed it."

Sam laughed and ran a hand through his hair. "I love you. You know that, right?"

She smiled and nodded... very slightly. "Yes. Yes I do."

He noticed the reservation in her smile. "Babe? You okay?"

"Uh huh. Perfect."

Sam cleared his throat. "Sweetheart . . ."

"Yes?"

"Something on your mind?" Sam asked.

"No..."

He arched an eyebrow. "Phoebe . . ."

"I'm stuck."

Sam wasn't trying to laugh, honestly he wasn't, but he couldn't help a tiny chuckle. "Am I gonna need to call the fire department to get you down? By which I mean get our demon to shimmer you out?"

Phoebe wibbled, her hands gripping the limb by her legs. "Uh huh."

Sam chuckled. "I love you. Okay, I'll go find him. Don't go anywhere," he said, and disappeared from the window.

Quite possibly he thought he was funny.

Unfortunately he reappeared a few moments later. "Frak. I forgot I sent him to go get some more hardware and stuff . . . um . . . can I come up after you?"

"No! If we both get stuck that will be bad."

Quite possibly she would panic.

"Hey, I'll have you know I was a champion tree-climber back in the day," Sam said. "We had to do something for fun when I was with the Tacoma Rainiers."

Phoebe shook her head violently, and that caused her to woble a little.

"Phoebe!" Sam blurted out in alarm. "Okay, that's it, I'm coming up there after you."

He didn't say 'whether you like it or not,' but it was probably implied pretty clearly.

"If you come up here, we'll both be stuck," she pointed out.

"Do you not trust me to be able to get you down?" Sam asked quietly.

"How are you going to hold onto me like you want to and climb down?"

She knew him very well.

"Well, see," Sam said, "there's this ladder in the garage . . ."

"Anders? I'm afraid of heights..."

No, she wasn't kidding.

"And you know," Sam said, his voice firmer this time, "that I won't let you fall. You trust me, don't you?"

"Of course I do!" She sounded insulted that he had asked.

"Then sit tight while I get the ladder, and I will come and get you down, and I won't let you fall," Sam said calmly. "Okay?"

"Cole's gonna flail," she said quietly.

"We worry about that after you're safe back on the ground," Sam told her. "Now I mean it, don't go anywhere while I get out there!"

He disappeared from the window again, this time at a run, and the sound of his footsteps thundering down the staircase were probably audible through the window, although the slamming of the back door probably wasn't, so much.

Piper watched Phoebe climbing a tree and then wandered over to find out what she was up to. "Phoebe, and I mean this in the nicest way possible, have you lost your mind?"

"There is a very distinct possibility, yes."

"I'm not sure climbing a tree right now is the best idea," Piper added.

"Probably not," Phoebe agreed. "But I'm up here now so should stay a little bit, right?"

"Um...I don't know," Piper said, frowning. "You could fall."

Phoebe nodded and was braced against the trunk. "I'm being careful."

"Why are you up there anyway?" Piper asked.

"I... don't know."

"Just...promise me you won't fall," she said. Piper worry? That would never happen.

"Not planning on it," she promised.

"Are you okay?" Piper asked, genuinely concerned.

Phoebe nodded. "I think I am. Promise."
